Following the UFC Welterweight title match-up, contenders Gilbert Burns and Leon Edwards had a heated exchange over who will challenge next for the 170-pound belt.
The UFC President himself already stated to MMA Junkie that Burns would receive the next shot at the belt following UFC 251:
“He’s the No. 1 contender. He’s the No. 1 ranked guy in the world. Yeah – he’s the No. 1 guy in the world. The kid is hungry. He wants to fight. He wants to be a world champion – and he’s No. 1. Yeah, that puts him in a pretty good spot.”
However, the argument stems from a tweet that Ariel Helwani of ESPN posted regarding Edwards and Burns fighting for an opportunity to get a shot at the belt next and as you can imagine, Burns wasn’t happy about that match-up:
After claiming that he was next in line for a title shot, Edwards saw Burns’ response to the proposed title eliminator and tried to dismiss the Brazilian’s accomplishments that got him into the number one spot:
It didn’t take long for Burns to respond and the 33-year-old took shots over his victories against Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, and Gunnar Nelson:
While the situation could always change, Burns remains the next challenger for the UFC Welterweight title at the moment. His dominant wins over former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia skyrocketed him into the top position of the 170-pound division.
