Could New Japan Pro-Wrestling be making their way back to Madison Square Garden in 2020?
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the promotion is close to inking a deal to return to the iconic venue in August 2020. Of course, nothing is set in stone and Meltzer notes that while the deal is close, WWE does still play a factor into the whole situation.
Back in 2018, WWE first blocked NJPW and ROH from hosting at the Madison Square Garden; however, Ring of Honor officials were eventually able to make a deal and book the stadium on WrestleMania weekend in April 2019.
Last year’s event was a co-promotional show featuring talents from New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, with Kazuchika Okada vs. Jay White headlining the entire event. While many praised the NJPW matches that took place that night, many were critical of the ROH portion.
There’s no word on whether ROH would be featured on the show as well. While the two companies didn’t exchange much talent for the reminder of 2019, NJPW stars such as Will Ospreay and Jay White will be competing at the Supercard of Honor show on April 4, 2020.
