Will AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling finally work together someday?
Since the formation of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, fans have wanted the Japanese promotion and AEW to work together. However, the tension between New Japan and AEW is well known and while the exact reason the relationship soured between the two sides is currently unknown, it’s been clear that both sides aren’t too interested in working together.
However, that changed a bit at Wrestle Kingdom 14 when Hiroshi Tanahashi faced Chris Jericho. If the former IWGP Heavyweight Champion defeated the AEW World Champion then Hiroshi would’ve been given an opportunity at the company’s top title. Tanahashi would ultimately lose the match-up; however, the relationship between NJPW and AEW seemed one step closer to repairing.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, NJPW President Harold Meij opens up about the possibility of the two sides working together and Meij gives an opportunistic take on a potential collaboration:
"Throughout our 50-year history we have had numerous relationships with other wrestling promotions. Japanese mentality is one of loyalty. We work under a long-term principle that, ‘Once in, you’re in for a lifetime.’ AEW has made tremendous inroads and is establishing their unique brand of wrestling with their vision of what wrestling should be. We continue to watch with interest how AEW continues to evolve their brand," Meij said.
Khan has stated the he’s very open to sending guys to New Japan and would treat the NJPW guys with respect if the Japanese promotion brought some of their talent over to AEW. While it doesn’t appear that the two sides will be working together anytime soon, it is encouraging that there’s a possibility that New Japan could invade AEW in the future.
