Last month, it was reported that WWE was looking to get rid of the gender-specific designation of the NXT Women's Championship (meaning it would simply be known as the NXT Championship). RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch also suggested that should be the case, but announcers on NXT soon returned to referring to it by its original name.
Now, Triple H has weighed in on those reports during a conference call for this weekend's NXT TakeOver: Portland event. "There were conversation that were had," The Game admitted. "It was basically about not having to beat it into the ground when you say it, but it just got run with and once...when you have that many people working on a product, and something gets taken the wrong way, everybody in trying to do their job, just spreads it."
That could be a reference to the backlash Lynch's comments on WWE Backstage received, and Triple H went on to elaborate on why he felt NXT could move away from calling it the "Women's" title.
"There was never an edict, there was never anything. It really was what it was, of just trying not to...if you’re showing a graphic, you don’t have to say, the title belt that says ‘Women’s’, the graphic that says ‘Women’s’, the announcers saying ‘Women’s’, so everybody is...but you get it. There are pictures of women there, you get what it is. You don’t have to beat it into the ground. It was more of, it just got run with and speculated on."
It's a shame WWE has moved away from taking things in that direction and it will be interesting seeing what happens moving forward. Do you think the NXT Women's Championship should be renamed?
