At NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa headlined the event in a move which the vast majority of fans were surprised by. Sure, their match was incredible but should it really have gone on last instead of the NXT Championship match featuring Andrade Almas and Aleister Black? Well, Triple H has now weighed in on the matter to provide a satisfying explanation.
"I feel like any of them could have [main evented], and this was a debate. A lot of points of view on it. There’s a part of me that goes, ‘Whoa, the title should close,’ and then there’s a part of me that goes, ‘You cannot pass that emotion.’ You just can’t. No level of moonsault, no level of flip off a ladder, no level of any of that is gonna pass that level of emotion and feeling — that level of emotion of the storytelling. I don’t know how you could have gone off the air better than Gargano gets his life back and his wife’s in there. Unless I have Ciampa run back in there and piledrive her, that’s the end. There’s always next time.”
So, there you have it! His explanation makes sense and while it would have been nice to see Almas headline the event before moving up to the main roster, it ultimately didn't hurt the match that much.
Black is now champion and Gargano and Ciampa are likely going to keep tearing up NXT on a regular basis. Almas being part of SmackDown Live is definitely interesting too and given what a hot streak he had down in developmental, here's hoping that continues on the main roster moving forward.
