Former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has expressed his interest in a match with Brock Lesnar on several occasions, and his wish might finally come true at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas next April.
The company had planned to pit them against each other on the Grandest Stage of Them all in 2023, though the idea was later scrapped. As a result, Lesnar opened WrestleMania Night 2 by battling Omos. Gunther, meanwhile, successfully retained the Intercontinental title in a hard-hitting Triple Threat match featuring Drew McIntyre and Sheamus.
A showdown between the two was teased during the Royal Rumble two years ago, and while doing press for WrestleMania 39, Gunther suggested that their encounter had satisfied his hopes for a match.
Despite that, WWE intended to revisit their potential feud last year. However, The Beast getting caught up in the Vince McMahon scandal led to him taking a two-year hiatus from the company, which saw Lesnar miss two WrestleManias before returning at SummerSlam earlier this year.
After Lesnar laid waste to John Cena a few months ago, and Gunther retired both The Last Real Champion and WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in what's proven to be a dominant 2025, it's being reported that Lesnar vs. Gunther is back on for next year's Show of Shows.
Lesnar is still expected to retire at next year's SummerSlam, so we could be looking at a rivalry that takes up most of 2026 before The Ring General retires yet another top star from the previous era.
"Of course, I heard something about it," Gunther previously said of his scrapped WrestleMania 40 match with the former UFC star. "I always saw Brock as my final boss. I always get portrayed as that, as the NXT UK Champion, the Intercontinental Champion, I was like the final boss of that division. And Brock, for a long time, was the final boss of the whole company."
"So I always saw myself in my future to be in a similar position to him, and to be that you've got to get in the ring with that guy."
"We'll see if there's a chance for it to happen again. I'm more than up for it," Gunther added. "How the situation is exactly right now, I'm really not that informed about it, to be honest. I think we had that one face off in the Royal Rumble, the reaction that was there and that was a confirmation for me."
