Bryan Danielson Recalls Vince McMahon's Shocked Reaction To Him Wanting To Be A Top Star In WWE

It was a big night for the "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson yesterday evening after he defeated Swerve Strickland to finally become the AEW World Champion in the main event of AEW All In: London.

The moment brought back memories of the night Daniel Bryan (as he was known in WWE) won the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 30. That looked like the start of his run as a top star in the company, though an injury derailed those plans and it turned out Vince McMahon never saw him that way, regardless.

"So one of the things, and I don’t know if my body can physically hold up to this if I were to win the title, one of the things that I got to experience in Ring of Honor, but I never really got to experience anywhere else is being 'the man,' right? Being 'the guy,'" he said in an interview which took place before the PPV. "Even in WWE, when I won the when I won the World Championship at WrestleMania 30, I wasn’t their guy, right?"

"They still had plans as far as, like, 'Okay, we really want to transition to Roman Reigns being the guy.' Vince legitimately sat me down and told me that. It was really funny, because the conversation was like, he’s like, 'Okay, so we have these great plans,' and this is like, a week after I had won the title, or whatever."

"He’s like, 'Okay, we’ve got these big plans. We’ll have a couple of title defenses for you in between now and SummerSlam. But at SummerSlam, you’ll wrestle Brock Lester, and he’ll destroy you, and then, we’ll build up Brock Lesnar for Roman Reigns, and we’ll make Roman the next John Cena.'"

"He’s telling this to me, and I’m like, and then I just kind of said, 'Okay, that’s great, but I would kind of like to be the next John Cena.' I just remember seeing the look on Vince’s face where he’s just like, 'Oh, I didn’t think you even saw that as a possibility for yourself.' It was really funny," Danielson continued. "This is the only time Vince has ever backtracked with me."

"Whenever he said something, he always kind of stuck to it, but that’s the only time he ever backtracked. He’s like, 'Well, nobody can really be the next John Cena,' I wasn’t the guy. I was just the guy that they needed at that particular point because the fans wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, right? So, that said, it would be cool on a national stage to be the guy for a period of time."

Danielson's injury meant John Cena was put in that position to be destroyed by Lesnar and McMahon tried and failed for years to turn Reigns into the new Cena. However, it wasn't until he became the Tribal Chief that he was embraced by fans... as a heel!

It's only now, on Triple H's watch, that Reigns is on track for a run as a red-hot babyface in WWE. As for Danielson, it's widely believed he may need to vacate his newly won championship due to needing surgery.

You can check out the full interview below along with some highlights from Danielson's title win.

It was a helluva match. Helluva show, really: Jaime Hayter's return after a 15 month absence; Jack Perry successfully defending the TNT belt against Darby Allen in a Coffin Match, with Sting making an appearance for the first time in five months; Mariah May defeating Toni Storm for the women's world championship, the culmination of a 9 month storyline (that thing that AEW famously doesn't have); Will Ospreay defeating MJF for the International Championship in another all-timer match.

Hell, there were even plenty of former WWE folks involved to keep your attention: Christian's Patriarchy dropping the Trios belts in a 12-man ladder match, then swooping in at the end of the Casino Gauntlet match to secure a shot at the World Champion; Hook defeating Chris Jericho to regain the FTW belt, with Taz seeing action for the first time in nearly a decade; Mercedes Moné defeating AEW original Britt Baker to retain the TBS belt; FFS, Ricochet making his AEW debut seems like it'd be newsorthy enough for this rag.

Bottom line, if you bothered watching the product, you might even enjoy it!
