It feels like a lifetime ago, but it was only last month when a "terrified" Tony Khan confirmed AEW had fired CM Punk following a backstage incident at Wembley Stadium's All In.
Punk has yet to comment on what happened but we continue to hear conflicting reports; for the most part, fans agree that the Best in the World leaving AEW was best for both parties, though the real losers in this situation are the people watching from home (and AEW's steadily declining ratings, of course).
While Punk's final match with his old Ring of Honor rival, Samoa Joe, taking place in front of a record-breaking crowd would mean his career ends on a high, it would also be a shame for us not to see the "Real" AEW Champion in the squared circle again.
We don't know if he has a non-compete clause but an eventual WWE seems at least somewhat likely. Similar to Cody Rhodes, Punk would be a huge draw for the company and it seems likely he won't encounter any of the same backstage issues in the sports entertainment giant as he did in the poorly managed halls of AEW.
It's previously been reported that Punk considered a WWE return earlier this year, and in recent weeks, all signs have seemingly pointed to his WWE return happening at Survivor Series in Chicago.
Rumour has it WWE isn't interested but until the event takes place, we can't say for sure either way.
Asked by 670 The Score in Chicago about these rumblings, Punk said, "They’re asking if I’m going to be there? I think it’s sold out. I think tickets are hard to get. I don't want to burst anybody's bubble. I'm kind of just sitting at home and enjoying this beautiful Chicago weather."
"I have an injury in the family. My dog blew his dog ACL. I'm literally just spending my time with him," he added. "I know that sounds crazy, but he is my son, and I take care of him and treat him as such."
He certainly appears to be having fun with the rumours and his tongue-in-cheek attitude suggests something might be in the works. Recently, Punk was spotted backstage at IMPACT Wrestling TV tapings, so whatever happens, we'd say it's a safe bet his time in the squared circle hasn't ended just yet.
As always, keep checking back here for the latest on Punk's in-ring future and possible WWE return.
