Cody Rhodes Explains Why He Was Never Okay With The Idea Of The Rock Replacing Him At WRESTLEMANIA

Cody Rhodes has addressed (briefly) being sidelined by The Rock at this year's WrestleMania, confirming he was never happy with the idea, despite what some online pundits would have you believe...

WWE will finally release the WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain documentary later today but how much it's going to reveal about what really went on behind the scenes remains to be seen.

What we do know is that when The Rock returned to WWE (and became a member of the TKO Group Holdings board), he decided to insert himself into the main event of WrestleMania, taking Rhodes' place in his planned match with Roman Reigns.

He felt that was the right thing to do and believed this dream match would go some way in making up for CM Punk's shock injury.

WWE attempted to lay the groundwork for Rhodes to instead challenge World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and even had him give The Rock his seal of approval on TV. None of it worked, though, and fans were quick to reject the Brahma Bull.

As a result, he was forced to turn heel and Rhodes got to finish his story as planned. Some felt Rhodes should step aside for The Rock and others argued that, being so familiar with the business, he'd happily allow the actor to headline the Show of Shows in his place.

Not so, according to the man himself.

"Where we would butt heads is in the idea that you could just come back in the midst of a story that was taking place, and just because you're The Rock, you can step into the starting lineup and take WrestleMania for yourself. A lot of people said, 'He's The Rock. He can do whatever he wants.' I even saw a podcast with two wrestling heads talking, and they said, 'I'm sure Cody is fine stepping aside for WrestleMania and doing it later in the year.' In my mind, I'm thinking, 'That's insane.'"

"That's the Super Bowl of what we do. To get to Sunday, the last day of WrestleMania, the last match, it's our literal Super Bowl. The idea that somebody thought I would be cool with it. They don't know me. That's nonsense. I worked my whole life for this. Rock should know I wouldn't be cool with it. Maybe that's an understanding that him and I have. He found out, I'm not cool with it. That's a good thing. You know who wasn't cool with The Rock? Steve Austin. They made magic together. They rubbed together so much it created diamonds. I do have a lot of respect for him."
