RAW Superstars Drew McIntyre and Sheamus started feuding over the WWE Championship late last year before their rivalry culminated at the Fastlane PPV in March. From there, McIntyre would go on to square off with Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania (a match he lost), while the Celtic Warrior defeated Matt Riddle to become United States Champion.
Recently, both men reflected on their No Holds Barred match before Sheamus admitted that he "fought as hard as I could" for that to take place on the Grandest Stage of Them All instead.
"We really were hoping this was gonna be WrestleMania," he says in the video below. "That’s where we felt the feud should basically climax, should come to an end at WrestleMania. I fought as hard as I could; we both did, to make that happen, but you do what you can do, you know? Make it the best way you can."
An argument could be made that to have this culminate at WrestleMania, WWE really should have started the rivalry a little later because it was already running out of steam by the time it ended.
Regardless, McIntyre was similarly disappointed things didn't pan out how the two old friends hoped. "If you see the pre-match video [for our Fastlane match], you’ll see that this was really WrestleMania worthy. Just the story, the real story we have...and we can always come back around maybe at next year’s WrestleMania. When we get fans back, it [the storyline] will be new again. But it was certainly a disappointment, we’re gonna have to do it again."
There's certainly some potential for these two to clash again somewhere down the line, though it might be more interesting for them to swap heel and babyface roles in that instance.
