Shortly after last night's Day 1 PPV, WWE announced that Drew McIntyre has been injured after suffering a cervical neck strain and "severe contusions." While that might sound like a typical storyline injury, PWInsider is reporting that there are rumblings backstage that the former WWE Champion really has been dealing with some nagging neck issues lately.
Apparently, the hope is that this will be a short hiatus, but until he's properly checked out, it sounds like McIntyre's status is "up in the air." The Scottish Superstar was actually spotted walking around backstage wearing a neck brace and had one on as he left the building; that's either playing into the "storyline" injury or an indication he's trying to be safe rather than sorry.
McIntyre was written off television after a backstage attack by Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin which saw them wrap a chair around his neck and slam him into the Day 1 set.
There had been rumblings that McIntyre would challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble, but with the Head of the Table testing positive for COVID-19 and Brock Lesnar now WWE Champion, creative plans could have changed to the point where McIntyre is able to address some issues that have plagued him for quite some time.
Stay tuned for updates.
