While WWE's creative team made some missteps with The Demon on the main roster, it was always entertaining to see Finn Balor embrace his inner darkness whenever he unleashed that persona for big matches.
While the gimmick was better utilised in NXT, fans long hoped that The Demon would square off with The Fiend. As that character, the late Bray Wyatt was near-unstoppable and to put those two in the same ring...well, it would have been magic.
Talking to The Ringer Wrestling Show, Balor confirmed he and Bray had discussed the possibility of making this dream match a reality.
"It was a pretty sombre atmosphere in the locker room," he said of his reaction to learning Wyatt had died. "I had a couple of days following the news. A lot of us attended a ceremony in Florida yesterday to celebrate Bray's life, and you know...sadly that seems to be happening far too often in the business, losing people so young."
"Obviously I'd had the opportunity to work with him a lot as Finn versus Bray, as the Demon versus Bray, as Finn versus The Fiend. The one thing that I'm sad that we didn't ever get to get to was this Fiend versus Demon match and that was something that we talked about at length," Balor continued. "We were kind of hoping that was going to happen eventually, but you know, it's not to be."
"Going back to 'the show must go on,' if something were to happen to me, I want you guys to know that I want the show to go on, and I'm sure, knowing Bray as well as I do, he definitely wanted the show to go on and then that's what we’ve done for him."
We missed out on something special here, that's for sure, though it sounds like The Judgement Day leader has retired The Demon for the time being, anyway.
As part of that faction, Balor continues to find great success, winning the Undisputed Tag Team Championships alongside Damian Priest at the recent Payback PLE. Now, he's a Grand Slam Champion in WWE, something the heel is taking great delight in reminding fans on TV!
