Following WrestleMania 41, much has been said about possible backstage friction between WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
The Final Boss' sporadic returns have repeatedly turned WWE's creative plans on their head, something that was never more evident than when The Rock no-showed WrestleMania in Las Vegas (despite inserting himself into John Cena's heel turn at Elimination Chamber).
So, is there a war brewing between the former in-ring rivals? WWE Hall of Famer and longtime friend of Triple H, Kevin Nash, shared his take on that.
"I don’t see the tension," he shared. "Does anybody know what IMDb is, and then you go to their page, and you see the projects he has? Dwayne is pretty busy."
"You have to realize he still has skin in the game. He still has ring time left and he wants certain things to align a certain way for him," Nash said of The Rock's approach to WWE. "Dwayne is not looking at what’s best for the company. He’s looking at what’s best for the character."
That's one way of looking at it, anyway, and Nash went on to share his take on how Hulk Hogan's history-making 1996 heel turn, which saw him form the nWo alongside Nash and the late Scott Hall, differs from Cena finally breaking bad.
"Yeah. This Cena turn has an expiration date, so I think that changes a lot," Nash said. "He stands there and goes, 'You have me for 27 more appearances and then it’s over with.' It doesn’t have the same feel of, 'I’m going to make your lives miserable forever.' Nobody the next night was saying, 'Come back Hulk.'"
It's a strange time for WWE. Creative no longer feels as strong as it did when Triple H first took over from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, and fans are finding fault with many of the decisions being made.
Cena's heel turn, while intriguing, doesn't feel like the best use of him during this final run, and The Rock going on social media to call wrestling a "work" and say he'd have booked the WrestleMania main event differently is also doing little to help matters.
With any luck, WWE will bounce back in the coming months, particularly if the rumours of another "Summer of Punk" are accurate (for now, he's busy feuding with Seth Rollins, Bron Breakker, and Paul Heyman).
