Rob Gronkowski could finally be returning to the sports world — just not the one many were expecting. Rather than returning to the NFL, the former New England Patriots tight end is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to join the WWE.
According to FS1's WWE Backstage program, Gronkowski is "deep in talks" with the WWE, although how he'll be used in the promotion is still unknown. The former NFL star
previously told reporters that he'd be interested in doing "one crazy match" in the WWE, but that he couldn't imagnie himself as a full-time wrestler.
Gronkowski has appeared in the wrestling ring before, taking part in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royale at WrestleMania 33 in 2017. He jumped the barricade to help his friend Mojo Rawley take down former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. Rawley previously suggested to ESPN that the two could participate in a tag match.
"Hey, man, we've got SummerSlam in Boston [this coming August]," Rawley said back in October.
"Maybe we'll do a tag match. I've been doing my own thing, but for him, maybe I'll do a tag match."
Gronkowski may not have traditional ring experience, but he is a massive specimen and gifted performer with a big personality. With a bit of training, Gronkowski could be a fun addition to the WWE, even if it does turn out to be a one-off. Plus, he knows how to throw a party.
The report notes that Gronkowski could make an appearance on WWE SMackDown as early as March 20. The pr wrestling promotion has not commented on the story.
