WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle hasn't shied away from expressing disappointment with his retirement match at WrestleMania 35. The Olympic Gold Medallist wanted to end his career against John Cena; instead, Vince McMahon had Baron Corbin retire Angle.
Despite that, a recent interview saw Angle heap praise on the recently released WWE Superstar.
"Baron, I think he’s underrated. I think it kinda sucks — they started utilizing him the way they should have, they had him beat me, which I was okay with, it was my last match and obviously you’re gonna lose your last match when you retire," he said. "Baron, after that, he ended up winning King Of The Ring and then nothing else happened with him."
"It’s a little disappointing to know that he beat a legend at WrestleMania in the legend’s last match and they didn’t really do much with him after that. For me, it makes me feel like I did that for nothing," Angle concluded.
Now, Corbin - using his real name, Tom Pestock - has responded to his former foe by saying, "To be fair, that's one of the reasons I wish I had become world champ! It would [have] paid honor to what Kurt did for me. I will forever appreciate it and wish I could have done more to make it worth it for him."
Following his big WrestleMania 35 win, Corbin started feuding with Seth Rollins but failed to capture the Universal Championship at both Super ShowDown and Stomping Grounds.
From there, it was all downhill for Corbin, though he'd find a little more success in NXT. Called back up to the main roster alongside Apollo Crews, the former United States Champion was briefly pushed alongside his new tag team partner before ultimately being released.
WWE did its best to make Corbin a main event talent, though McMahon's booking ultimately doomed him. As an authority figure, the heel Corbin drew off viewers and he was never able to fully recover from that.
