Goldberg Officially Announces WWE Retirement Match In 2025 - But Who Will The WCW Icon Face?

Goldberg became an icon in WCW and later signed with WWE for what proved to be a memorable run in the mid-2000s. He returned to the company years later, winning the Universal Championship and feuding with the likes of Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens, and Roman Reigns.

Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018, Goldberg's last match was at Elimination Chamber 2022 when he lost to the Original Tribal Chief.

Goldberg has since revealed that Vince McMahon promised him a proper retirement match, only for it to never happen. However, it's a new day in WWE with Triple H in charge and Goldberg was recently present at the Bad Blood PLE for a verbal clash with World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.

During an appearance on the SEC Network, the WWE Hall of Famer confirmed his official retirement match will now take place in 2025!

"Here's the deal," he said. "The news of the day is that, per three executives - Nick Khan, Chris Legentil, and Paul Levesque - in 2025, Goldberg is having his retirement match!"

"I think we know who the subject or the victim, probably the frontrunner right now, we know who it is," he teased. "In 2025, Goldberg makes his return in a retirement match."

Goldberg later added that he has "a couple months" to get ready and confirmed there is currently no date or time set (a match like this will surely be saved for the Grandest Stage of Them All at WrestleMania).

All signs point to Goldberg facing Gunther and, in a recent update, Dave Meltzer said, "Regarding the Bill Goldberg vs. Gunther match, we don’t have a date for it but were told it was not planned for the Royal Rumble show as things stand right now."

During his last run, Goldberg wasn't at his best in the ring and we wouldn't expect anything too major from him. WWE can ultimately go two ways with this; either, he squashes someone in a classic Goldberg match to end his in-ring career on a high or he puts over someone like Gunther.

There's nothing to necessarily say he'll only have one match, of course, so it will be interesting to see how this story develops in the coming months as the Road to WrestleMania nears.
