Love or hate John Cena's retirement match at Saturday Night's Main Event, there's no denying that it's made Gunther one of the most hated men in WWE.
The former World Heavyweight Champion made Cena tap out in his final ever bout, and faced a hostile crowd both at the PLE and during Monday's RAW. Now, Gunther has broken his silence on being the Leader of the Cenation's final opponent in an interview with TMZ.
"I could tell the whole day already. It’s different because my tour bus was parked outside the venue, and I always had to be escorted through a bunch of people, a bunch of fans, to get to the building," he said of the hostile reaction he received at Saturday Night's Main Event. "Usually when I leave the building, and there are people, you get a little [Gunther ] boo, but it felt tense early in the day already."
"I could feel it felt tense. The people really wanted to see John win and really wanted to have that feel-good moment with him at the end of it, but it didn’t happen. You don’t always get what you want."
Asked if he has a message for those upset fans, Gunther replied. "Stop crying. Okay, life goes on."
Putting his in-ring persona to one side for a moment, the Austrian heel said that the significance of his match with Cena is still sinking in. "It’s hard to grasp, to be honest," Gunther admitted. "It’s been a very fast 48 hours. But looking back at it...it was arguably the biggest match in history."
"I think John Cena is the biggest superstar there has ever been in our industry, and to be the one to end that is a huge privilege, but also a huge responsibility," he continued. "I take that very seriously. I think we went out there and gave the audience the match that the occasion deserved."
When the match ended, Gunther could be seen briefly sharing a moment with Cena. What did he say to the Last Real Champion? "I said thank you," Gunther revealed. "I think that’s the only appropriate thing to say in that situation."
During Monday's RAW, the stage was set for Gunther to potentially clash with Superstars like AJ Styles and R-Truth. However, we're expecting big things from The Ring General at next month's Royal Rumble PLE in Saudi Arabia.
