For months, we've seen speculation run rampant online about Drew McIntyre's WWE status. It's been widely reported that he's unhappy with his current place in the company and is looking to leave once his contract reaches its end.
We've also heard the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement over money, but it was - somewhat ironically - at Money in the Bank on Saturday night that the former WWE Champion made his return.
Standing face-to-face with his WrestleMania opponent, GUNTHER, the stage was clearly being set for them to clash for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam next month. Whether that's the creative McIntyre was hoping for is hard to say, but we now have an update on his WWE status.
According to Dave Meltzer, while his deal expires early next year, the Scottish WWE Superstar's contract could be extended beyond April's WrestleMania as a result of the time he's taken off for injuries.
For what it's worth, Triple H attempted to debunk these rumours about McIntyre's WWE future during the Money in the Bank press conference. Saying they'd both roll their eyes at the online reports during his absence, The Game put his absence down to McIntyre getting a couple of different issues sorted while he was on the shelf.
WWE now has plenty of time to convince the fan-favourite pro wrestler to stick around and we don't anticipate him heading to AEW for a long time yet.
It would be a real blow for the company to lose him, anyway, and this feud with GUNTHER has the potential to be among WWE's best offerings heading into the yearly PLE. The Intercontinental title also holds more weight now than it ever has, so putting that belt on McIntyre could do a lot of good.
Stay tuned for updates.
