Not too long ago, we learned that Drew McIntyre's contract was nearing its end and it was claimed the Scottish Superstar had reached an impasse with WWE over money.
While the former WWE Champion was drafted to RAW last week, we haven't seen him on television since he unsuccessfully challenged for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania. Now, Dave Meltzer has weighed in and it doesn't sound particularly promising.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, he reports that McIntyre is "working with the idea there’s a good chance he’s finishing up."
WWE has removed McIntyre from advertising for London's upcoming Money in the Bank PLE and replaced him with Roman Reigns. None of this bodes well for his future with WWE, though there's always a chance the two sides will be able to eventually reach an agreement.
It's worth noting that McIntyre left WWE before and found a great deal of success; the difference now, of course, is that he could head to AEW, a company holding a major PPV in England later this year (his non-compete would likely close the door on any sort of surprise appearance, of course).
Something tells us WWE will probably find a way to make this right and give McIntyre what he wants. Simply put, the former WWE Champion is too big of a star to lose, especially to a rival company that's been struggling to gain momentum lately.
Early plans called for McIntyre to headline WrestleMania in a match against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins for the world title. However, that changed when The Rock didn't come back to battle Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship.
Ultimately, McIntyre may have good reason to be upset with WWE, especially after the company dropped the ball by not having him win the world title in front of his home crowd last September at Cardiff's Clash at the Castle.
We'll keep you updated.
