There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding Edge's in-ring future. After what appeared to be a retirement match against Sheamus during a recent episode of SmackDown in Toronto, Canada, rumours immediately started swirling that he was AEW-bound.
There, the Rated-R Superstar could work with up-and-coming young wrestlers and, perhaps most importantly, reunite with his old tag team partner, Christian Cage.
Ringside News has since gone looking for an update, hearing from one longtime member of the WWE creative team that the current belief internally is still that Edge plans to sign with AEW.
What's interesting about this, though, is that the WWE Hall of Famer was featured in a new intro video for this week's SmackDown. While he's long been associated with the blue brand, adding him when there's seemingly so much uncertainty about what he'll do next is an intriguing move on WWE's part.
According to the site's sources, this shouldn't be taken as confirmation Edge is coming back and it wasn't a mistake by the production team. In fact, WWE was simply looking to get fans talking, likely in an effort to generate buzz around their shows ahead of next week's big merger.
It worked, anyway, as we now can't help but think Edge will choose to remain with WWE!
Edge recently released a video addressing his future and in that, he said, "I didn't come at [WWE] with some crazy contract or anything. They didn't deny me, I have a contract extension sitting in my inbox. I just don't know what to do. The first time I had to retire it was forced, and this time, the choice is in my lap and it's a lot harder."
"WWE gave me that night Friday night in Toronto and it was the best night of my career. A lot of people will say you should retire at WrestleMania or this or that but it's not their career," Edge continued. "Friday night was really special for me and I don't know if that can be topped, to be perfectly honest. If we think we can then great but I need to sit with it."
Since his miraculous return from a career-ending injury, WWE struggled to find a place for the former WWE Champion; the pandemic did little to help matters, of course, but he's never won a title. Despite that, he did headline WrestleMania, albeit in a losing effort against Roman Reigns.
A low point came when he formed The Judgement Day, with what felt like a never-ending feud ensuing once he'd been kicked out of the group. There have been plenty of high points, though, and we know a match with Sheamus was something Edge was keen on.
As always, keep checking back here for updates.
