John Cena Comments On His Reputation For Burying Younger Talent: "They Fail To Operate At An Elite Level"
John Cena is perceived by many as being "protected" in The WWE, and this in turn has led to a reputation that he buries up-and-coming Superstars when they face him. Cena addresses this in a new interview...
Roman Reigns can self-apply any moniker he wants, but John Cena has been "the guy" in WWE for many years, and still is today. However, the multiple-time WWE Champion didn't rise to the top of the company without attracting a certain amount of controversy.
Many have accused Cena of "burying" up-and-coming talent when their time comes to face him by charging over them and putting a stop to their momentum, and during an interview with The Wrap, the man himself explained what he feels gave way to this perception:
"This is why I have the reputation of quote-unquote “burying younger talent,” because I will let them do whatever they want with me — and then after they get done, they’re not as motivated. So, it’s not that I sink their ship, it’s that they fail to operate at an elite level. And I’m on to the next person, [to] whom I say, “Hey man, bring your best punch and I’m gonna punch back” — and they don’t take that attitude beyond me."
Cena may well be right when it comes to some Superstars not fulfilling their potential as far as intensity goes, but he doesn't actually get to the bones of the issue; Many feel that it's his refusal to put these guys over in the first place that brings any push they may have been in the middle of to a screeching halt.
Of course, that's just one way of looking at it - what do you guys think?
