Netflix has released the first trailer for Mr. McMahon, a new six-episode documentary chronicling the rise and fall of the former WWE Chairman.
What was once going to be a documentary made hand-in-hand with WWE (likely celebrating Vince McMahon's impact on the pro wrestling business) is now also set to delve into the events leading up to his resignation amid a series of sexual misconduct and abuse allegations.
WWE isn't going to like that and, with McMahon already essentially written out of the company's history, we're sure the plan is to largely ignore this show as that September 25 premiere date draws near.
That may be easier said than done because, in the trailer, we get a glimpse at what this documentary was likely once meant to be as Vince promises to pull back the curtain on his true self. Along the way, famous faces like The Rock, John Cena, and Hulk Hogan show up to heap praise on their old boss.
However, things soon take a darker turn - just as they did in real life - and all signs point to this being a fascinating exploration of who the man who shaped pro wrestling as we know it today really is.
You can watch this first look at Mr. McMahon in the players below.
Mr. McMahon chronicles the rise and fall of Vince McMahon, controversial businessman and co-founder of WWE. From his transformation of the WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse to the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation, this six-episode series offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life and his enduring franchise.
Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations - filmmaker Chris Smith (Tiger King) and executive producer Bill Simmons (30 for 30) present an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment.
"The goal behind 'Mr. McMahon' was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world," Smith explains. "Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations."
"The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind."
The six-episode series premieres on Netflix on September 25.
