While WWE has given its Superstars some much-needed time off over the holidays, we'll soon be on the Road to WrestleMania. That means there are a busy few months ahead for the sports entertainment giant and, if recent rumours are to be believed, those could involve splitting up the Undisputed Tag Team Championships.
According to Ringside News, there are indeed plans in place to make this happen and it's an idea which has been discussed since they were first brought together.
The Usos unified the RAW and SmackDown tag team titles when they defeated RKBro last year and they've remained together ever since, even during new reigns for teams such as Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso, and The Judgement Day.
The champions have been allowed to compete on both brands, though it's been clear from the start that WWE wasn't necessarily committed to the idea as there are still a total of four belts being used (Roman Reigns, for a time, carried both the WWE and Universal Championships before they became the sole Undisputed WWE Universal title).
Here's what the site had to say about a possible split:
"There were rumors going around within the wrestling community that #WWE has plans in the pipline to split up the WWE Tag Team Titles."
"When asking about this, Ringside News was told 'we've been discussing splitting the titles ever since we united them.'"
"We can confirm that 'there are plans right now to do it, and there also plans not to do it.'"
RAW and SmackDown would benefit from having their own tag team champions, but despite a tag team match main eventing this year's WrestleMania, it's not as if the division has ever been a major priority for WWE. That could change under Triple H's watch and WrestleMania would be the perfect time to make it happen.
Earlier this year, The Street Profits shared their thoughts on the unification and how that impacts WWE's tag teams.
"With the tag team titles split, there are more opportunities for tag teams to have tag-team title matches and be involved in separate brands and you get different feuds," Montez Ford said. "The other end of it is like, having both tag team titles merged together just makes the importance of the tag team championships as a whole more important because it's that one supreme tag team that everyone is gunning for."
Angelo Dawkins concurred, adding: "It's hard to choose. Obviously, you want to get more opportunities out there at the same time, nothing is better than being the mountain top of the tag team division."
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
