Ever since Vince McMahon was ousted from WWE, fans have noticed a considerable improvement in the quality of storytelling and matches on RAW, SmackDown, and NXT.
While the product is still far from perfect, Triple H has made for a better head of creative than the controversial WWE Chairman in almost every respect and now looks set to resurrect a fan-favourite tournament.
There have been rumblings about "King of the Ring" making a comeback for some time, but we can exclusively reveal that it will take the form of a Premium Live Event (PLE) titled King and Queen of the Ring. The plan is clearly to crown a male and female Superstar, though hopefully without the toe-curling regal gimmick that so often plagued the victors under Vince's watch.
In recent years, the matches have often taken place across RAW and SmackDown, with the finals scheduled for unrelated PPVs such as Clash of the Champions and Crown Jewel, and even random episodes of RAW.
"Queen of the Ring" is almost certainly going to replace the "Queen's Crown" tournament that Zelina Vega won back in 2021. That was also that same year The New Day member Xavier Woods was named King of the Ring after defeating Finn Balor.
The fact this tournament is getting a dedicated PLE suggests WWE hopes to make it feel meaningful and worthwhile than other recent efforts, with the winners potentially receiving the same sort of star-making pushes as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar and, yes, Triple H.
Established in 1985, King of the Ring was a beloved event for many years, though has only once ended with an additional reward, which was the 2002 tournament where Lesnar received a match for the WWE Undisputed Championship.
No further details are available at this time, but a logo for the event does exist and we'd expect an announcement to be made by WWE shortly (possibly as soon as this Saturday during the Elimination Chamber PLE).
Stay tuned for updates.
