WWE is in the midst of negotiating new television deals for RAW, SmackDown, and NXT, and while the USA Network and FOX remain in the mix, there's a lot of chatter about the shows heading elsewhere.
Disney is thought to be a frontrunner, with WWE programming likely destined for FX in that case (ESPN may seem like a better fit, but other sporting events would run the risk of preempting RAW and SmackDown on a regular basis). On the streaming side, Amazon Prime Video looks to be a contender as well.
In recent weeks, we've seen WWE send main roster talent to NXT in an effort to increase interest in the show. That includes appearances from Baron Corbin and Mustafa Ali, not to mention Bron Breakker challenging Seth Rollins for his new World Heavyweight Championship.
Clearly, the hope is to give NXT a short-term ratings boost so that it looks more attractive to buyers, though there's also a lot of talk about making NXT a third brand moving forward rather than a developmental one.
It's now being reported that at SummerSlam (one of WWE's four big PLEs alongside the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, and Survivor Series), we're likely to see at least two NXT Championships on the line.
Apparently, the current expectation is that we'd see Carmelo Hayes' NXT Championship and Tiffany Stratton's NXT Women's Championship defended during the stadium show. With Great American Bash taking place on July 30, it will be interesting to see how WWE handles this.
As always, nothing is set in stone at this point and WWE has yet to make its NXT plans clear.
Stay tuned for updates.
