Back in 2000, The Undertaker unveiled a new gimmick as a biker character who became knows as the American Badass. He kept that new persona until 2003 and after a short time away from the ring, he returned as the Deadman in 2004. 

Now, in a new clip from WWE Network's The Broken Skull Sessions, The Undertaker explains why he decided to change his character inthe first place. He says that it boiled down to knowing that he was beginning to grow stale, hence why a drastic change was needed which, at the time, was very timely. 

"Probably, that’s my best attribute is being able to figure out...if I started feeling stale my audience is probably starting to feel it before me," he explains. "You get wrapped up in what you’re doing. The small changes, the breaks at the right time."
 
He adds that he doesn't think the Deadman character would have made it through that era in wrestling, hence why he needed to adapt. Check out more from The Undertaker in the player below:
