WrestleMania Night 2 was headlined by Roman Reigns defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes. Due to continued interference from The Bloodline, the American Nightmare enlisted some help of his own, including WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker.
He took out The Rock with a chokeslam in a spot many believed would go to Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Talking on Busted Open Radio, the Deadman revealed his return came together after a series of calls and texts from Triple H, Michael Hayes, and Paul Heyman.
"Paul Levesque, he called me. I was like, 'Well, this must be good if you get a phone call.' So, I answered and he goes, 'What do you think about getting involved in this? This may be like a dusty kind of finish.' And I was like, 'Hmm, that's interesting. Look man, I'm there.'"
"The first thing I ask is, 'Is everybody on board with that?' Because you run the risk of being a huge distraction to something that's been two years in the building," The Undertaker continued. "So that was my first question. I was like, 'Is everybody on board?' And he was like, 'Yeah, I think everybody's on board. We're going to sit down. We're going to talk about things.'"
It was an amazing moment and one which many fans have argued worked better than Stone Cold making his way out to the ring (The Undertaker being The Undertaker meant the lights could go out before his famous "Gong" ushered in his surprise appearance).
Elsewhere in the interview, the Phenom talked about how the hot streak WWE is on today compares to what he experienced during the Attitude Era.
"I will go and in my head I’ll try to pick things apart and there’s a lot of things that I don’t like," he started. "Obviously, there’s still a huge aspect of storytelling that’s missing. It’s getting better but overall, the atmosphere and business you cannot deny what’s going on right now. Everything is sold out."
"It was for the Rumble or maybe at Mania, I was walking down the hallway and they had this sheet on the wall of the cities that there are no comps for," 'Taker added. "And I’m not just talking about 2 or 3 cities, there’s a list of 30 cities that you cannot get comps for because they’re sold out and I hadn’t seen that since the Attitude Era. Obviously, prices are different and all that but the energy level in the crowd."
"The product, the guys, it’s strong man. I will never say anything is better than the Attitude Era. I’m gonna hold onto that but what’s going on right now is as close as you’re ever gonna get and they’re making more money."
It remains to be seen whether The Rock will ever get a chance to take his revenge on The Undertaker, though as the latter has retired from in-ring competition, we're not banking on it.
The Final Boss is, however, expected to take on Rhodes at next year's Show of Shows...
