During last week's episode of RAW, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque announced plans for the revived World Heavyweight Championship to be the Monday night show's world title.
The reasoning was that, due to WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns' limited schedule, WWE deserved a world champion who would be there to defend the belt on a regular basis. It makes sense, though there are already fans who are looking at this title as something of a consolation prize for those who aren't "good enough" to beat Roman.
Talking at the Backlash press conference in Puerto Rico today, Triple H finally revealed how WWE plans to crown the first World Heavyweight Champion at Night of Champions.
"Starting after Backlash, this Monday night on 'Raw,' we will begin a World Heavyweight Championship tournament," he explains in the video below. "It will be across both brands."
"On 'Monday Night Raw,' there will be two triple threat matches, with the winners facing each other later that night to determine a winner for 'Monday Night Raw.' Then, Friday on 'SmackDown,' the same will happen."
That makes sense, though it is surprising that Superstars from SmackDown are also going to be eligible to compete. Presumably, they would then be traded to RAW and, if nothing else, this will at least create a little more intrigue when it comes to who is most likely to win the belt in this tournament.
Roman Reigns is also expected to defend his title at the event, so a challenger will surely be decided for him soon too.
Night of Champions takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 27.
