On Monday's RAW, The New Day celebrated its 10th anniversary during a special segment which saw Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods tease a breakup.
With that, Big E made his first appearance on the show in four years. He expressed how much Kingston and Woods mean to him, recalling how they supported him after what's likely a career-ending neck injury. While he shared his hope to eventually be medically cleared to compete again, for now, he suggested a return to serve as their manager.
Instead, Kingston shunned Big E, mocking him for being unable to bounce back from a neck injury the same way as "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, and Edge. Woods then blamed him for holding them back as they've waited on his return and claimed he'll never be medically cleared.
The duo demanded that Big E leave the ring, seemingly bringing an end to The New Day as they bonded over their shared hatred for their longtime friend.
Now, new details have been revealed about WWE's original plans for this heel turn.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, "When Odyssey Jones came in, they were going to tease issues with them not getting along but it would end up with Kingston & Woods going heel by choosing Jones and having him publicly replace E. But then Jones got fired and the whole thing was put on hold."
Jones was drafted to RAW for a long time before showing up and seemed to be in store for a huge push alongside The New Day. However, allegations of domestic abuse soon hit social media and he was promptly fired.
We don't know whether Kingston and Woods will now seek out a new third man, but Omos certainly isn't up to much these days (no pun intended).
During a recent interview, the former WWE Champion addressed his and Woods' shocking heel turn by saying, "I am surprised that most of these people out here don’t really understand why we did what we did. We came out there, and you can always tell when you’re right when you make an argument and you say nothing but facts."
"Everything we said on Monday night was completely factual. We told the truth. You might not like to hear what it was, but people online and social media are cussing and cursing us and there are all these insults that have nothing to do with what we’re talking about"
"I know that when you can’t bring a rational argument to the table, that means you know that you’re wrong," he continued. "If you don’t have any facts for the argument. Just because you’re upset doesn’t mean you’re right."
What are your hopes for this storyline moving forward?
