During last Friday's SmackDown, WWE celebrated Edge's 25th anniversary and sent the Rated-R Superstar off in style in a main event match that ended with him defeating Sheamus.
Once the show went off the air, Edge delivered what appeared to be a retirement speech and we've since learned that he's wrestled his last contracted match for WWE. However, he'll remain signed with the company until the end of next month.
We'd expected Edge to sign with WWE again, but it now appears he's AEW-bound.
According to PWTorch, Edge recently presented WWE with "what it would take to retain his services, but WWE declined to meet his request."
"This has sparked a belief within WWE that he is probably headed to AEW and knew at that time what AEW could offer him (based, perhaps, on conversations with other wrestlers of his star power about AEW pay)."
WWE hasn't really used Edge as a main event talent during his run and, while he has headlined PLEs - including WrestleMania - the former WWE Champion has never really gotten close to winning any titles. That's particularly been the case over the past year or so.
AEW President Tony Khan is a fan of Edge and would likely pay him what WWE wasn't willing to. After all, he'd be a big ratings draw for the company, particularly when it comes to a possible reunion with Christian which WWE, for some reason, passed on.
We'll see what happens as WWE may eventually do whatever it takes to keep the WWE Hall of Famer from signing with the rival company.
