WWE is in something of a unique predicament in the sense that they have too many top stars and only two main event spots at WrestleMania! CM Punk going on last on either Saturday or Sunday is inevitable, with Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns guaranteed to close out the other night.
The question is, who will face the Head of the Table?
For the past nine months or so, it's been obvious that WWE is building to Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes II, with the latter finally finishing the story by securing the one title that's long eluded his family in the WWE Championship.
Since then, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has returned to WWE and made it clear he's interested in finally squaring off with his cousin on the Grandest Stage of Them All. So, does WWE sideline Rhodes for a Hollywood A-Lister who will generate heaps of mainstream media attention or do the right thing by Cody?
Well, according to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a compromise may have been found.
He says that, while no decision has been made yet, Reigns' WrestleMania opponent "is expected to be either The Rock or Rhodes, or it could be a three-way."
In 2014, Dave Bautista (Batista) returned to WWE and won the Royal Rumble. However, fans immediately rejected The Animal because they wanted Daniel Bryan to main event the Show of Shows. Ultimately, Batista's match with Randy Orton become a Triple Threat and Bryan won the WWE Championship.
If WWE isn't careful, the desire among fans to see Rhodes beat Reigns could lead to fans turning on the Brahma Bull!
"The Rock is The Great One - he's still electrifying," Rhodes said earlier this month. "CM Punk is one of the greatest stars in the history of wrestling. I know what I'm up against. Look at the roster - it’s loaded with stars. But that doesn't bother me. I'm not flinching. I'm not rooting against anyone else, I'm just working to make it happen."
Addressing this current run and the connection he has with fans, the American Nightmare added, "This job, it's not like punching a clock. It’s a really fun movement with the fans. We’re really enjoying this moment that we’re having together. And I only get better with a heavy schedule. I'm able to be the best I’ve ever been because I'm doing it so frequently."
"No run lasts forever," Rhodes adds. "I know that. I’ve seen that. So I'm savoring every moment–and I’m working toward accomplishing what's never been before."
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
