WWE's PG Era began in 2008, and it's never been overly popular with pro wrestling fans. While it did make the product more accessible to younger viewers, it alienated a great many fans and sent them flocking to AEW when that company first launched.
Since Vince McMahon was ousted from the company, a lot has changed. That was evident on the Road to WrestleMania, with swearing and blood used sparingly - but in a memorable way - during The Rock's clashes with Cody Rhodes.
Even Kevin Owens was busted open on SmackDown last week to great effect and this change in approach feels like the right move for WWE under what's been dubbed the "Triple H Era." Oh, and let's not forget Paul Heyman's unforgettable Hall of Fame speech!
Now, we've learned that this move away from family-friendly PG content is a permanent one.
"It was said to us that the Rock interviews and Heyman promo are considered the official end of the PG era," Dave Meltzer reveals in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter. "This isn’t to say that the TV shows will be changing. That is something talked about but no decision has been made."
"The attempts to keep things PG in the big picture, which had been a big thing to the point of the memo being sent out about it several weeks back, such as in social media or in non-television shows, is now no longer the case."
This is far from the only change we've seen on Triple H's watch. When fans rejected The Rock after he took Rhodes' place in the WrestleMania main event against Roman Reigns, The Game realised that WWE had no choice but to give the fans what they wanted (which Vince would never do).
"Now it's a different time, and the way I do things is slightly different," he explained. "My career, I learned from being here, but there were things along the way that I always thought I would do differently. In this time now, I get to make those calls and with a large team of people."
"Everything you do is dependent on reactions. That's what we do as an industry," Triple H added. "The beautiful thing with this group and with Cody and Roman and Rock especially, everybody's got their ear to the ground. And then we all just get together and figure the s*** out."
WWE's move away from PG content has benefited WWE but hurt AEW. Why? Well, the fans who initially embraced that company for its edgier content can now get it from a sports entertainment giant which, thanks to Triple H, has shed that and its PG rating to return to pro wrestling.
