Another staple of the middleweight division during the early years of the UFC, both Frank Trigg and Matt Hughes had unforgettable bouts against various fighters within the 170-pound division. Not surprisingly, these two men first collided for the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 45; however, Hughes would get the victory thanks to a standing rear-naked choke.
Following his UFC debut, Trigg would bounce back with impressive TKO wins over Dennis Hallman (UFC 48) and Renato Verissimo (UFC 50). Hughes on the other hand was on a tear throughout the welterweight division, as the Illinois native entered his first bout against Trigg on a 13-fight winning streak, with four successful title defenses against Hayato Sakurai (UFC 36), Carlos Newton (UFC 38), Gil Castillo (UFC 40), and Sean Sherk (UFC 42) prior to UFC 45.
Following his win over Trigg, Hughes would suffer a setback by losing the title to BJ Penn; however, the welterweight would regain the championship a short time later by defeating Georges St-Pierre at UFC 50. Both Trigg and Hughes walked into the pay-per-view with some strong momentum, but who would leave Las Vegas, Nevada as the welterweight champion? Revisit the classic fight below:
