We may have our bantamweight title match-up very soon.
Earlier this week, Henry Cejudo was finally stripped of the 135-pound belt cementing his retirement status. Dana White previously stated that Petr Yan was definitely getting the first opportunity at the UFC Bantamweight Championship; however, the UFC President never confirmed a second name that would fight for the prestigious title.
That changed on Wednesday as White said that the bout currently in talks for the vacant belt is Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo, though the date and location has yet to be determined:
“I’ll break this right here and right now – and my people are probably going to kill me for this one,” White said to ESPN. “(Henry) Cejudo has retired, so we’re talking right now about Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo for the vacant title. We don’t have a date or a place set for that, but that’s the fight we’re looking at right now.”
Neither man is currently in the United States at the moment and there’s no telling when the bantamweight match-up will take place. Aldo was originally scheduled to fight Henry Cejudo for the championship at the UFC 249 pay-per-view; however, the 33-year-old was forced to stop training due to the coronavirus pandemic.
