Cody Garbrandt and Raphael Assuncao will finally step into the octagon against one another in June, should both fighters remain healthy leading up to the bantamweight encounter. The former UFC Bantamweight Champion was originally set to fight Assuncao at UFC Fight Night Columbus; however, Garbrandt was forced to pull out of the fight due to suffering with kidney problems.
The 28-year-old is set to make his return to the octagon for the first time since his fight against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235. Garbrandt is currently in the midst of a three-fight losing streak, also dropping two consecutive losses to T.J. Dillashaw for the UFC Bantamweight Championship.
Garbrandt hasn’t won a fight since his UFC Bantamweight title victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207. His professional record currently stands at 11 wins and 3 losses. According to the former 135-pound champion, this will be his final fight before moving down to the flyweight division.
Assuncao is also in the midst of a losing streak as the bantamweight has suffered back-to-back losses to Marlon Moraes (via submission at UFC Fight Night 144) and Cory Sandhagen (via unanimous decision at UFC 241). The Brazilian's last win was against Rob Font via unanimous decision at UFC 226. Assuncao’s professional record currently stands at 27 wins and 7 losses.
