Another champion won’t be fighting anytime soon as Amanda Nunes will no longer defend the UFC Women’s Featherweight title on May 9.
Dana White has essentially confirmed the supercard event on May 9, with the Interim Lightweight Championship fight between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, Amanda Nunes defending the women’s featherweight title against Felicia Spencer, and Henry Cejudo vs. Dominick Cruz for the Bantamweight title reportedly set for the pay-per-view.
However, the two-division champ revealed on CBS Sports that she will not compete on May 9, citing that she needs a full camp to train:
"Actually, I'm not fighting May 9," Nunes said. "I'm going to fight, [but] I don't know yet. I don't think this is the right time for me right now to fight. Let this coronavirus pass a little bit so I can at least have a full camp. We can maybe see around June, [but] let's see what is going to happen. But I'm not fighting [May 9]."
The UFC President hasn’t officially confirmed the line-up for the May 9th event, though White stated during a recent update of several events that the mega-card will move forward with a location soon-to-be announced.
The coronavirus has put a screeching halt to everything in the sports world including multiple UFC pay-per-views and fight night cards. Originally, Khabib Nurmagomedov was supposed to defend the Lightweight title against Tony Ferguson; however, the undefeated fighter was forced to pull out of the event due to a lockdown in Russia.
