AJ Styles Defeats Samoa Joe In Controversial Fashion To Retain The WWE Championship At HELL IN A CELL

The top-notch Hell in a Cell matches continue with a hard-hitting WWE Championship encounter between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe, which The Phenomenal One managed to win - but not without a lot of controversy!

AJ Styles is still our WWE Champion, but Samoa Joe actually won the match!

These two former TNA Champions went toe-to-toe again at Hell in a Cell, and The Samoan Submission Machine dominated for most of the match. In the end, The Phenomenal One went for his signature flying forearm but Joe managed to counter with the Coquina Clutch. Styles was able to roll through, however, and seemed to score the pin.

A furious Joe was adamant that AJ had actually tapped out before the ref's hand came down for three, and sure enough, the replay confirmed that he was right.

Screwy finishes are often disappointing, but this was actually smart booking as it puts the sympathy squarely with the challenger and sets up a third match between the two at some point.
