It appears that Gunther will go away for a bit.
The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion worked a 30-minute match with CM Punk and he ended up losing to the 46-year-old. Notably, Gunther wasn’t on Monday Night RAW and that’s due to him being sidelined due to a nagging injury that he’s set to have surgery on, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.
"I was told Gunther's having surgery on his nose. I was told that a couple of days ago, and it's very clear from watching the finish that Gunther's having surgery on his nose pretty quick because they shot the angle where, you know, it's like he busted his nose."
WWE has confirmed that Gunther will be taking some time away by the company stating that he'll be out indefinitely. It’s unknown just how serious the injury is or how long Gunther is expected to be out. There’s also no word on what Gunther’s role will be once he comes back. The “Ring General” regained the WWE World Heavyweight title from Jey Uso back in June following his shocking loss to him at WrestleMania 41. This time around, Gunther only had one title defense, which was against Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event. He was successful against the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
Gunther would actually talk about his match against Goldberg days before his Summerslam bout against CM Punk and he explained the importance of telling a story that went beyond Goldberg’s unusual structure.
“I was very happy with how everything went [against Goldberg] and I feel like we exceeded expectations for the match." Gunther said on Radio Times. "For me, it was important to not go out there and have the typical three or four minutes of action and that’s it. I wanted time to tell a story and take the audience on a ride and make them feel bad for him a little bit before it all ends. I think we succeeded with that. He can be very happy with the match and the connection that he had with the audience because that felt very special.”
Goldberg may have not been too thrilled over the way his retirement went, but he has praised Gunther during his interviews since the match. Here’s hoping that Gunther isn’t gone from the ring too long. A break right now is definitely best for his character, but it would be great to see him mix it up with guys like Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. Here’s wishing a speedy recovery to the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion!
