CM Punk's rivalry with John Cena in the 2010s is the stuff of legend and provided us with some of WWE's best matches and angles during that era.
The Second City Saint recently spoke to press during the Money in the Bank post-show press conference and Punk reflected on his and Cena's connection. He's compared it to a marriage in the past but now likened it to two comic book friends and rivals.
"I always looked at it [their dynamic] like Superman and Batman," Punk said. "You know, Superman - he's great, he's cool...if you like that sort of thing. Then there's Batman - who doesn't like Batman? And that's what I mean, when you talk about John, you got to talk about me; certainly when you talk about me, you've got to talk about John."
The Best in the World also reflected on his iconic Money in the Bank 2011 match with Cena. That ended with Punk walking out of WWE with the WWE Championship in a story which broke the internet at the time and remains a career highlight for both men in the ring.
"That moment, that night, you say it's the best moment of my career," he started. "I feel fortunate to have had a career where I can maybe argue that, and I think a lot of other people could argue that too. I'm going to always be tied to John Cena, and if that is the greatest moment of my career, I'm proud of that."
Punk has made it clear he hopes to face Cena during the 16-time WWE Champion's upcoming retirement tour and we're keeping everything crossed that it eventually happens.
After all, the last time they squared off was in 2013 on an episode of RAW when they clashed to name a new #1 contender for the World Heavyweight title.
For the time being, Punk has his hands full with Drew McIntyre. Here's what the Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer's recently said about the odds of it happening at SummerSlam:
"Right now, it is not 100 percent as far as Punk and Drew at SummerSlam, but I was told it is probable. Punk was kind of asked about it and he kind of beat around the bush and he kind of said, I mean, it's probably happening but he kind of did say it's up to other people, he has to get cleared and everything by the doctors. I was pretty much told they're pretty confident in it but you can't go and say 100 percent because it ain't 100 percent. It's been the hope, but it's now more than a hope, now it's a plan, Drew McIntyre and Punk for SummerSlam."
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
