CM Punk On Whether He Still Wants To Main Event WRESTLEMANIA And Why He Thinks WWE Needs More House Shows

CM Punk has talked candidly about whether he's still pushing to main event WrestleMania ahead of what looks set to be a stacked show and weighs in on the pros and cons of fewer non-televised live events.

CM Punk has had an incredible, Hall of Fame-worthy career. However, he's never main evented WrestleMania, something we know contributed to the Best in the World's decision to leave WWE in 2014.

Last year, the idea had been for Punk to headline the Show of Shows in a match with World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. His injury at the Royal Rumble derailed those plans, and the hope now is Punk might get a second chance at this year's Show of Shows.

Helping matters is the fact that WrestleMania now takes place over two nights; however, with Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena bound to headline one of those and Roman Reigns vs. The Rock another strong possibility, will Punk be able to achieve his dream in 2025?

Talking at the post-RAW press conference on Monday, the Second City Saint admitted that he's had something of a change of heart:

"While I think you would be foolish to say that it doesn’t matter. I would also feel its foolish to hold me to the same ideas and things that I said 10-12 years ago. A lot of other people think that maybe I need to main-event WrestleMania to solidify anything I’ve ever done. I could have never come back here and had a Hall of Fame career. If that opportunity arises, I’m not going to shy away from it, because it scares the hell out of me, frankly. If your dreams don’t scare you, you need to find bigger ones."

"Main eventing the first Raw on Netflix is a pretty big deal, though. Nobody else can say they did that. I want people in the locker room to feel the way I did. I want people to look at me and go, ‘That should be me. I want that opportunity. I want that situation. I want that high-pressure match.’ Pressure will absolutely make diamonds and there are too many talented people in that locker room to be complacent."

It would be a terrible shame for Punk to miss out on that WrestleMania main event. However, it's good to know he's no longer defining his career by something that pales in comparison to the rest of what he's achieved in the ring.

In a separate interview with The Night Cap, Punk shared his thoughts on why WWE reducing its number of non-televised live events. While he appreciates it's good for his fellow Superstars, he does miss interacting with the fans on a more regular basis.

"Nowadays, it’s a lot less. I think it’s better for all of the athletes. But you wind up missing out on all of those live shows where you’re wrestling for those fans. You’re not necessarily wrestling for TV. You do build up a callus. We’re kind of missing that right now, at least I know I am. We just did a Christmas loop most recently over the holidays, where I was in Pittsburgh for the Netflix thing at the football game."

"We went to Madison Square Garden, went back to Pittsburgh, go to Baltimore, went over to Chicago, down to Houston for TV. Like that, that is my bread and butter. Being on the road, hanging out with the boys, getting to interact with fans. You just to have, I don’t wanna say more fun, because TV can be fun, but TV is more of a high-pressure situation."
