The best pro wrestling storylines typically have some truth to them, so it's no great surprise that fans were so invested in Edge's feud with Matt Hardy in the mid-2000s.
For those of you who might have forgotten, Matt dated Lita through early 2005 until she and Edge had an affair. An incensed Hardy aired his grievances on the internet and while social media wasn't a thing at the time, it got enough attention for WWE to fire him.
The company had done little to help matters, but WWE eventually rehired Matt after realising fans were in his corner. As a result, he and Edge were put in a rivalry which got heated fast (including in a brutal Steel Cage match during 2005's Unforgiven PPV). It made for compelling viewing but, honestly, was also pretty tasteless.
Edge and Lita didn't last (the WWE Hall of Famer is married to Beth Phoenix) and the Rated R Superstar and Matt are now friends.
Talking to Chris Van Vliet, Edge - who currently wrestles for AEW as Adam Copeland - claimed that they put their issues behind them much quicker than many fans might realise.
"Well...we're here, right? Okay. So how do we try and pull some positives out of a lousy situation?" Copeland remembered. "And a lousy situation that - I made the bed, right? And also, the company wants to run with this. Well, let's try to make a good story out of this, a good program out of this."
"Let's try and make money out of this. Because at that stage, what else are you going to do?"
"Once we both realized, 'Oh, okay. Still the same guys. Still have the same chemistry, still have the same everything.' I feel like the fanbase took a lot longer to come around to the idea that we were okay than we did," he concluded.
Edge and Christian's feud with The Hardy Boyz was the stuff of legend, and it's good to know that they were able to move on from some very real personal issues.
In fact, it wasn't too long ago that Matt acknowledged that by revealing he'd like to re-team with Jeff and end his in-ring career in a tag team match with their old foes.
"Our rivalry is just so iconic," he said. "I feel like that would be a pretty amazing way to end it, having one last match with those guys."
