John Cena only has a handful of dates left in WWE, but it sounds like the company is mulling over a big change to the Leader of the Cenation's final match this December.
According to Bryan Alvarez on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live, "Originally, the final John Cena match was going to be in early December, Saturday Night’s Main Event. And this is not confirmed, okay, but it does look like there is now a discussion that the date will be moved so it will be head-to-head with AEW World’s End."
That would be WWE's most aggressive attempt at counter-programming AEW yet. However, the company is planning something similar for an unnamed PLE that's currently scheduled for Saturday, September 20, opposite AEW's All Out PPV. As of now, that's when Cena vs. Brock Lesnar is planned.
Alvarez noted, "We did talk about how there’s going to be one more of these before the year was out, and I think they’re going to try and put the final John Cena match on Saturday Night’s Main Event in Boston head-to-head with World’s End."
In the past, WWE has typically pitted NXT shows against AEW, but this shift to marquee main roster events suggests they're now looking to hurt Tony Khan's company more than they ever have before.
Before battling Lesnar, Cena will face Logan Paul at Clash in Paris later this month. During a recent edition of his Impaulsive podcast, the influencer shared some fighting words while weighing in on the former Undisputed WWE Champion's brief heel run.
"I’m a little disappointed in Cena, personally like as a fan and as a guy who knows him. I saw the heel turn and I was like, ‘Alright, welcome to the bright side. You can just be yourself and people will accept you for that.’ But then the switch up back to trying to be a babyface makes me feel like he’s seeking outside validation and he’s being guided by the audience instead of himself. It feels like to me, we’re watching a midlife crisis happen live. I’m serious."
"I wish he would be more like me and just be himself. I’m serious. I think he needs to just like find yourself and stop trying to like please the crowd for your own personal validation. Are you just doing it because the final boss says it or Triple H says it? Are you being puppeteered by the powers that be? Why don’t you just be yourself and be The GOAT John Cena?"
