Aron Stevens became one of WWE's most popular Superstars as Damien Sandow, but when fans started getting behind him...well, that's not something Vince McMahon has ever been a fan of.
Rather than getting behind the Tag Team Champion as a singles star, the WWE Chairman instead buried Sandow before he was eventually released in 2016. It was a real shame and a missed opportunity; however, it's yet another example of Vince not understanding what fans want.
Stevens has kept his finger on the pulse of the wrestling world and recently spoke with Fightful about a number of topics. Among them was Dave Meltzer's widely criticised rating system in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
He's given out more 5 and 6* ratings to AEW matches and stars than nearly all of WWE's perfect scores combined, with many believing that's a result of his friendship with The Elite.
For Stevens, they're not something he believes hold any weight in his world.
"What Meltzer thinks the wrestling business is, it is not," Stevens tells the site. "He is judging it based on athletic performances and whatever. I mean, to not give [Hulk] Hogan and [The] Rock five stars? Dude, what is wrong with you?"
"Come on, you nitwit. Look, I don't know him; I've never met him. Certainly, I've never gotten a five-star match from him. However, I don't need a five-star rating because I am a star."
The vast majority of professional wrestlers - outside of AEW, at least - appear to agree with this assessment. Why? Well, Meltzer has never awarded 5* to matches including names like Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and Triple H!
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter's ratings are bound to continue dividing opinions and aren't really something it's worth putting too much stock in. As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
