Ridge Holland's WWE contract was supposed to end later this week. However, after repeatedly criticising the company on social media for leaving him unable to make a living while injured, he was recently released early.
WWE is paying for his rehab and medical costs, but unable to earn a living due to his injuries and a 90-day non-compete, Holland repeatedly took to social media to reveal that he's in a position where he can no longer pay his mortgage.
Holland likely won't be able to step back into the ring for some time, if ever, as he's dealing with a Lisfranc foot injury—suffered while performing for TNA at WWE's behest—and may require neck fusion surgery somewhere down the line.
Holland is said to have taken a $200,000 paycut when he signed a new one-year deal last November. The company was considering releasing him at the time, but he pushed to remain in NXT. It's also been reported that the company feels he should have adjusted his finances and been prepared for a possible release.
A GoFundMe was recently launched with the intention of raising $60,000 to help support Holland and his family in the coming months. It currently sits at just over $10,000, and reportedly received contributions from WWE Superstars Chelsea Green and Omos.
Many fans have been quick to wonder why Holland needs money from fans when he was recently earning six figures in WWE. Now, he's taken to social media to address the backlash and claim that it was set up by a family member without his involvement.
"Thank you all for the incredible support shown through the GoFundMe campaign," Holland wrote. "However, I want to clarify that I was not aware the page was going live and had no prior discussion with the family member who created it. I’ve since requested that no further donations be accepted, and this change should take effect within the next 24 hours."
"[Once] we figure out how to move forward and I recoup the amount donated, I will be donating said amount to charity," he continued. "I sincerely apologize if the page caused any upset or offense — that was never the intention. Thank you for your understanding and kindness."
It remains to be seen what the future holds in store for the former WWE Superstar. In the meantime, you can read Holland's statement in full below.
