Gunther is heading into WrestleMania as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and it's fair to say the Ring General has fared well on Triple H's watch. After all, it's been widely reported that former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon planned to bury the Austrian and send him back to NXT.
That's yet another example of McMahon being horribly out of touch, especially as Gunther has managed to cement himself as one of WWE's top Superstars since the disgraced billionaire's departure.
Talking to Ariel Helwani, Gunther revealed what it was like to call Vince his boss. "I was under Vince for four months or something, and it was a strange work experience. The direction was very confusing. It was hard to figure out what was expected of me."
He then made a point of praising Triple H for saving pro wrestling. "Obviously, he’s my boss and I’m in a very good position at the company right now, but I think, to a certain degree, that he saved professional wrestling, to a big degree, I think because I remember when I started in 2005, and all the Europeans that tried to get into WWE."
"There was such a mystery about it, like who to talk to and what to do. It seemed so far away, such an unrealistic point to achieve," Gunther continued. "Hunter was the one that pushed for opening the world to WWE and created so many jobs and opportunities back then for so many of the guys, like for us, for all the European guys."
He added, "He opened the floodgates for the wrestling world outside of WWE, and since then, the change has been very positive. I think that was a big achievement, to be honest, because the business changed since then and it changed to the better."
Elsewhere in the interview, Gunther confirmed he's signed a new deal with WWE and that a tour bus was part of it. He also revealed that he never considered going elsewhere.
"I’m set where I am. How could I? I think I saw that statistic recently that since I signed in 2019, I’ve been champion like 85 or 90% of the time, or something like that," the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion explained. "So obviously, they always saw me in a certain way and gave me their trust. I enjoyed it."
"Even on the smaller scale and regular jobs before where I could step up and take on responsibility and get the trust or earn the trust of someone, and I can fulfill that, and I can make it worth it, those are moments that make me proud and that drive me."
WWE appears to be setting the stage for Jey Uso to defeat Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, a strange decision when it was only last year that he lost the Intercontinental title to Sami Zayn on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
