While John Cena's heel turn hasn't necessarily been a failure, it's quickly become apparent that fans want to cheer for the Leader of the Cenation during his final year in WWE.
Cena coming out each week to share his disdain for the fans got old fast, and the Undisputed WWE Champion's feud with Cody Rhodes has done the American Nightmare no favours. Cena might have got a little too real with Rhodes during the build to their WrestleMania match, and fans have cooled on the babyface ever since.
The WrestleMania finish didn't help matters, and neither have Rhodes' recent wins over Jey Uso and Randy Orton. It feels like many fans might be on the cusp of turning on the former WWE Champion, and speculation is running rampant that he's about to break bad.
During Friday's SmackDown, Rhodes appeared to have donned the same glasses worn by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson during the first RAW on Netflix and could be seen wearing the Rolex he gifted the Final Boss before the Show of Shows last year.
We later saw a heel-ish side to Rhodes during the show when he attacked a cowardly Cena and forced him to sign a contract for their Street Fight at SummerSlam. Cena, meanwhile, seems to be teasing a babyface turn.
There were moments in his matches with Orton and CM Punk where Cena appeared to pull away from his heel persona, and his actions after SmackDown were also more like what you'd expect from a babyface professional wrestler.
This is why fans are now convinced that we're getting a double turn at SummerSlam, with Rhodes turning heel and, subsequently, turning Cena babyface.
What will be key is where WWE goes next. Cena can move on from the title and have his final few months in WWE as a red-hot babyface; Rhodes, meanwhile, might sell his soul to The Rock and become the bad guy he's often said he doesn't want to be in WWE.
Are there enough viable babyfaces to pit against Rhodes, though, and is turning the new face of the company into a villain a wise move when the clock is ticking on how much time Cena has left in the ring? We'll have to wait and see.
