Jelly Roll competed at Summerslam.
The music artist isn’t the first celebrity to fight in a WWE ring. But he’s certainly one of the rare celebrities who took a loss. It shocked the masses as fans and critics both predicted that Randy Orton and Jelly Roll had won this match easily. But according to the man himself On Cody's, What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Jelly Rolly requested to lose his match at Summerslam.
“I told Triple H I want to lose at SummerSlam. Just cause no celebrity’s ever took an ‘L’, they always put them over. And if you don’t put me over, I always have a reason, there’s always just something lingering there, I can pop up anytime.”
Another big surprise was how quickly Jelly Roll seemed to grasp the wrestling aspect. He’s looked relatively good throughout the Summerslam build, but he went nearly 20-minutes in his Summerslam match. That’s no easy feat, yet Jelly Roll held up the end of his bargain. That’s due to a couple of talents down in NXT. Jelly Roll specifically thanked a couple of names who helped him get into ring shape.
“A couple of NXT kids that I want to shout out that really deserve it. Tag team champs over there are called Hank and Tank. I can’t wait till they get called up. I am cheering for them to get called up. The day they get called up, I’m going to cancel the show to come show up for them. They’ve been that good to me. But even better to me is a kid named Mitch, they call him Stacks at NXT.”
Jelly Roll also noted that Myles Borne, Matt Bloom, Robbie Brookside, and Shawn Michaels helped him train as well. Jelly Roll also discussed on Cody's podcast Roman Reigns, celebrities matches in general, and so much more!
Jelly Roll seems like a genuinely nice guy and an actual fan of professional wrestling. Those types of celebrities tend to do the best in this environment. Based on his comments, this won’t be the last time we’ll see him in a wrestling ring.
Triple H had high praise for the music artist in the post-Summerslam show, so he’s seems on board with bringing back Jelly Roll.
"100% [he overdelivered]," Levesque said on the SummerSlam night one post-show. "I said this to him in the back when he was done, and he walked in the back and doc was checking him out, making sure he was okay. I walked up to him and said, 'The one thing that you did made everybody here proud. You earned your spot in our business.' You earned that. The biggest word I can say to tell him, and I will tell him again right now, and I don't say it to a lot of people unless it is earned, but my respect."
