It's no secret that John Cena remains close friends with former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, and the 17-time WWE Champion has previously come under fire for defending the billionaire.
McMahon remains embroiled in a legal battle with former WWE employee Janel Grant, and the lawsuit she's filed has accused him of serious sexual abuse and trafficking. Despite that, rumours continue to swirl that Vince could be in attendance for Cena's final match at Saturday Night's Main Event this weekend.
During a recent interview with Joe Rogan, Cena was asked for his perspective on where things stand between McMahon and WWE. "He's out in my eyes," the Peacemaker star stated. "I’d like to think that time heals everything, and I believe in forgiveness, but I also believe in, like, looking at the body of work. But I also noticed a lot of fragile stuff going on there. I don’t know. I don’t know. Man, I don’t know."
"I’ve learned to become a little bit more accountable for what I say," Cena added, taking the accusations a little more seriously than he has in previous interviews. "And yeah, just because I feel a certain way about a person, doesn’t exonerate them from being accountable for their actions."
"And just because he did start, quote, unquote, all this gangster shit, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need to be accountable for his actions. So let’s figure out what that means, and then figure out if we can, if we can move forward and bring that back in the fold, or if it stays the way it is." Cena went on to say that the decision about McMahon's possible return to WWE is "way above my pay grade."
Elsewhere in the conversation, Cena reiterated that when he faces Gunther this weekend, that's the end of the line for him.
"I’m gonna retire on the 13th. They will be moved on by the Royal Rumble. That is real facts," he said. "I will be forgotten. That is not a plea to sympathy like 'Always remember me.' By the Royal Rumble and the road to WrestleMania, nobody gives a f***, because they’re focusing on what the show is."
Doubling down on that, Cena added. "Three weeks after I retire, nobody’s gonna give a f***." That seems a little harsh, but professional wrestling fans do move on quickly, and the Road to WrestleMania will be upon us in no time. It's been reported on multiple occasions that a WWE Hall of Fame induction for Cena could be up next.
