John Cena was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this week to promote the upcoming second season of Peacemaker. Talk soon turned to his final few months in WWE and who the future WWE Hall of Famer's opponent will be in his last match.
Fallon asked Cena if he has someone in mind, but the Leader of the Cenation reiterated that he's just there to do whatever WWE asks of him.
"No, no. I’ve never operated like that," Cena explained. "I’ve just always kind of been reliable, showing up, and doing whatever I’m asked. And I really want this tour to be, not only special. I want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it. So whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I’m cool with that."
The 48-year-old later elaborated on why he's chosen to leave professional wrestling behind. "I feel a little bit slower. I’m not as strong as I was. I look at all the current Superstars, and they’ve earned the right to chase their dreams. For me, it’s time."
Cena continued, "I also remember when I was a young kid back in 2002 thinking I’d never get a chance. And then when I did, I came up with like a young, hungry class. And I think if I hang around any longer than now, I’m just taking time away from those young guys who can be the next chance to make an impact. It’s time, man. It’s time."
As the list of dates Cena has left continues to dwindle, we know of at least two opponents he'll face. The first will be Logan Paul at the upcoming Clash in Paris event on August 31. He's also expected to face Brock Lesnar next month.
WWE has a couple of options for Cena's final match; it could be one of his old rivals or a rising star on the main roster. It all depends on whether WWE wants to have Cena go out as a winner or loser, but the former does seem somewhat more appealing.
Much of 2025 has been wasted on Cena being a heel, a direction for his character that most fans agree didn't work. With that in mind, most would surely prefer a happy ending for the former Undisputed WWE Champion when his in-ring career concludes.
