A parody of wrestling promotions of old, Southpaw Regional Wrestling was released on YouTube earlier this year in four hilarious instalments. It seemed like WWE may have been testing the waters for a series on the WWE Network, and while we still don't know what form the show will take, John Cena has confirmed that it will indeed return in the near future.
"It was a hit. I think there’s a great core audience in the WWE that looks for stuff like that. Yes, they like to see heated rivalries and they love that good vs evil story, but they also have a sense ofhumor. They’re human beings. And we are essentially laughing at the industry. We are parodying the industry, the way it was, and people enjoy it.
Here we are, thirty years removed from that era, and we can now look back and laugh at the way things were done and especially the small time promotions trying to keep up with quote unquote New York when Vince was doing crazy global stuff and everyone else was falling by the wayside, and this was just their crazy last ditch attempts to keep up with the frontrunner. It was really fun, and there’s more on the way. I’m much looking forward to it."
That's very exciting news, and while the show has faced some backlash for mocking the wrestling promotions WWE put out of business, there's no denying that it was a lot of fun.
One of the highlights was Luke Gallows as Tex Ferguson, and while he made only sporadic appearances in those first four episodes, Cena has promised we're seeing more of him.
"Bro, I have seen Tex Ferguson unleashed. Be on the lookout for more Tex Ferguson. He is a superstar. He is just a superstar, man."
With any luck, we'll hear more on Southpaw Regional Wrestling's return soon. It was clear to see while watching the series that everyone involved was having fun and a lengthy WWE Network series would be great fun. What do you think? Be sure to share your thoughts down below!
